How to Create Perfect Shadows in Photoshop

A shadow helps any subject look grounded in its background. This tutorial makes creating the perfect shadow easy and fun!

Shadows are complex, so use many layers.

Shadows can be difficult to create in Photoshop because they are very complex. Shadows start out dark and fade out as they move farther from the object. The easiest way to replicate the complexities of a shadow is by creating multiple layers with multiple shadows and blending them together.

Learn how to use the Gradient Tool and a few layers to create realistic shadows in this episode.

Use the Gradient Tool to Create Shadows

Shadows are darker at their core and fade out as they get farther from the center. You can achieve the same effect using the gradient tool.

Start by selecting the gradient tool and picking the ‘Foreground to Transparent’ gradient in the ‘Gradient Editor’. Next, choose a radial gradient and on a new layer, click-and-drag outwards to create a radial gradient.

Next, transform the gradient by pressing ‘CTRL/CMD + T’. Flatten the radial gradient out and size it accordingly to the object. If needed, change the opacity of the gradient or use the eraser tool to remove excess shadow.

Opacity and Hardness

The areas closer to the object will cast harder, darker shadows and the areas farther will have lighter, softer shadows. To replicate the effect, create different layers with different gradients on them. Move the layers into place to achieve a realistic shadow.

How to Use Select and Mask in Photoshop CC2015 5.0

Adobe just released a new version of Photoshop CC2015, version 5.0, and with it come some great new tools. In today’s episode, learn how to cut your subject out of their background using Select and Mask.

Where to Find Select and Mask

If you want to select a subject to remove its background, you can use a combination of a bunch of different selection tools located in the Select and Mask dialogue.

First, go to ‘Select – Select and Mask’, or click any selection tool and check Select and Mask on the top toolbar. This option will only be available on version 5.0 of Photoshop and up, so if you haven’t upgraded your software, be sure to do so.

How to Use the Select and Mask Tools

Select and Mask makes selecting easier by putting all of the selection tools in one place.

The Quick Selection tool will guess-select a section of your subject based on where you paint. The Refine Edge tool works well on fine areas like hair. The Brush tool allows you to paint in any general areas the selections might have missed. The Lasso tool will add to or subtract from your selection in whatever shape you draw. Hold ‘Alt/Option’ with any tool to deselect instead.

Advanced Settings on Select and Mask

View Modes for your selection include Onion Skin and Black and White, which you can cycle through by hitting ‘F’. Edge Detection adjusts how much of the subject’s edges your selection includes, particularly around the hair. Global Refinements can smooth, feather, shift, or add contrast to the selection edge. Use the Output Settings to choose how the selection will show up in the document. In this case, we loaded it in as a Layer Mask.

How to Place a Logo Behind a Person in Photoshop

Be creative with your logo placement! This tutorial will teach you how to put your logo behind a person like a pro!

How to Extend the Image

First, choose the Crop tool and check Content-Aware Crop in the top toolbar. Then, simply drag a crop edge outward, and the Content-Aware Crop will automatically fill in the empty space with more background. This works best with beach landscapes.

Alternatively, use the Crop tool and drag a crop edge outward. Using the regular Content-Aware tool, make a selection around the transparent area, including some of the background. Go to ‘Edit – Fill” and the Content-Aware option will fill the gap the same way. Make sure ‘Color Adaptation’ is checked for the best results.

How to Cut the Subject Out

If the subject is on a simple background, the Magic Wand tool is a quick and easy way to make a selection. Simply click on your background, and hold ’SHIFT’ as you click on the areas you want to cut out to include them in your selection.

Next, load your selection as a layer mask by clicking on the Layer Mask icon, then unlink the Layer and Layer Mask. This way, you can move the logo anywhere you want, and it will only show up behind the subject.

How to Use Spin Blur in Photoshop

Our #1 PRO Tutorial ever is now on Sale! https://phlearn.com/product/photoshop-101-301

How to Use Spin Blur in Photoshop

The Spin Blur allows you to add radial movement to a static image. In this episode, we use the Spin Blur to rotate the wheels and tires of a car, making it look like it is moving!

Controlling the Spin Blur

To create a Spin Blur on your image, first duplicate the background layer and navigate to ‘Filter – Blur Gallery – Spin Blur”.

Within the Spin Blur dialog you will have access to several controls that will allow you to create an accurate blur. Adjust the location of the Spin Blur by clicking-and-dragging the center control point of the spin bur dialog. Move it to the location you want to blur.

To adjust the strength of the blur, move the ring around the center of the spin blur clockwise, or change the “Blur Angle” in the control panel on the right side of the dialog box.

Adjust the size, rotation, and feathering of the Spin Blur by moving the control points on the outer edges of the Spin Blur.

To move the blur center by holding ALT/OPTN and clicking-and-dragging the center control point of the Spin Blur.

To duplicate a Spin Blur, hold ALT/OPTN + CTRL/CMD + Click-and-Drag the center of the control point of the Spin Blur.

Older Versions of Photoshop

Spin Blur was added to the Blur Gallery in Photoshop CC 2014. If you are using an older version of Photoshop, you will still be able to spin objects in Photoshop, but the process is a bit more complicated.

For older versions, go to ‘Filter – Blur – Radial Blur’ and choose ‘Radial”. This will allow you to rotate around a central point in your image. To use the Radial Blur, first make a selection around the area you wish to blur, then load the filter. You can choose the blur radius to add less or more blur.

Masking and Creating Multiple Spin Blurs
It is a good idea to duplicate the background layer before creating a Spin Blur so you can use a layer mask to make the blur visible only where you want it to show up.

Click on the Layer Mask Icon and paint black on the layer mask where you want to hide the Spin Blur.

To create multiple Spin Blurs, simply load several in the Spin Blur Filter, or if you need some areas to overlap, use the Spin Blur Filter on multiple layers and mask in the areas you want each to be visible.

How to Use Libraries in Photoshop

Our #1 PRO Tutorial ever is now on Sale! https://phlearn.com/popular

How to Use Libraries in Photoshop CC

For those of you not currently using Libraries in Photoshop, this is a MUST SEE episode. Learn how to browse stock images, create character styles, sync colors and collaborate with people around the globe — all within Photoshop.

Search Adobe Stock within Photoshop
Adobe Stock offers thousands of images, video, and vector illustrations available at a reasonable licensing rate. You can use the images as part of a design or composite photo, or save them as-is.

Click on the search bar in the ‘Libraries’ panel to search adobe stock. You can filter your results to show photos, illustrations, vectors and videos. Once you find the right stock asset, click on the cloud icon to save a preview in your library. Once the preview is synced to the library, you can drag it into any document.

You will be working with a lower-resolution watermarked file, which is usually good enough to figure out if it is the right stock asset for you. Once you decide on the asset, right-click on the thumbnail in the library and go to ‘license image’. The watermarked preview will be replaced with the full-resolution non-watermarked version instantly!

Sync Colors for Marketing and Branding
There are many cases when you want to work with consistent colors from one document to another. You can now save color swatches to libraries, making them available for later use.

Use the eyedropper tool to select a foreground color, then select the ‘Add Foreground Color’ button at the bottom of the Libraries panel. You can rename the color by double-clicking on the original name.

Saving colors in a Library will help maintain a consistent brand identity when working with new assets.

Create Character Styles
Most brands follow strict guidelines when it comes to colors and typefaces. To maintain consistency, you can add character styles to a Library by clicking on the “Add Character Style’ button on the bottom of the Libraries screen.

To use the character styles, simply type your message using the type tool, then select the type layer and choose the character style from the Libraries panel. It will automatically change the existing type to match the character style defined in the library.

Add Images and Groups to Libraries
You can add layers, images, groups and entire PSD documents to a library by clicking on the layer or groups of layers and pressing the “Add Graphic” icon at the bottom of the Library panel.

To work on the assets, right-click on the icon and go to ‘Edit’. From here you can drag the asset into other documents or edit it in the same window.

Share and Collaborate
Once you have filled your library with all the assets to create an image, you can share it with clients or other artists quickly.

If you are working on a project involving multiple people, click on the ‘Collaborate’ button within the ‘Libraries’ menu. This will take you to Adobe’s website and open a prompt asking you to invite other people to work on the document. Simply add their email address and they will receive a link to work on the files in the library.

To share a library with a client, click on the “Share Link’ button. The recipient will be able to view the library’s assets, but they won’t be able to edit. This is useful for proofing a design.

Our #1 PRO Tutorial ever is now on Sale! https://phlearn.com/popular

How to Get Six Pack Abs in Photoshop

Why work out in the Gym when you can get perfect Six Pack Abs in Photoshop? Learn a simple technique to create abs in Photoshop!

How to Create Ab Shapes
To create shapes that look like abs, start by using the Rounded Rectangle Tool. Create one rectangle over the stomach and change the radius to look like part of the body.

Duplicate the first shape to mirror the other side of the body, then group the two shapes together. Next, duplicate this group twice and bring one group above and place one group below.

Select the top group of ‘Abs’ and press CTRL/CMD+T to bring up the transform dialog. Next, hold CTRL/CMD+ALT+SHIFT and click-and-drag one of the top corners to activate the perspective warp to make it look like the Abs taper inwards towards the top.

Do the same thing on the bottom set of abs, but bring in the bottom instead of the top.

Once all of the groups are transformed into the desired shape, group them all together, duplicate the group and merge it into one layer by pressing CTRL/CMD+E.

Next add a Gaussian Blur to the ab shapes to make them integrate into the body.

How to Use Layer FX on Abs

After getting the abs shape defined, double-click on the layer or go to ‘FX-Blending Options’ at the bottom of the Layer Panel. Lower the ‘Fill Opacity’ to 0, making the layer invisible, but the layer FX visible.

Click on ‘Bevel and Emboss’ and use the ‘Emboss Style’ to add highlight and shadow to the shapes. Be sure to mimic the angle of the bevel and emboss to match the lighting of the original photo.

Change the highlight and shadow colors to match skin tone by clicking on them and using the eyedropper to sample color from the actual skin.

Each photo will require different settings, change Depth, Size, and Softness to get the most realistic results.

Finishing Touches
To finish the Abs Effect, create a layer mask on the layer and paint black on areas to fade them into the skin. Use the Transform command CTRL/CMD+T to transform the ab shape into place, and change opacity as needed.

If you find you still need to make changes to the Layer FX, simply double-click on the Layer FX on the layer and make adjustments until the abs look real!
