How to Use Spin Blur in Photoshop

How to Use Spin Blur in Photoshop

The Spin Blur allows you to add radial movement to a static image. In this episode, we use the Spin Blur to rotate the wheels and tires of a car, making it look like it is moving!

Controlling the Spin Blur

To create a Spin Blur on your image, first duplicate the background layer and navigate to ‘Filter – Blur Gallery – Spin Blur”.

Within the Spin Blur dialog you will have access to several controls that will allow you to create an accurate blur. Adjust the location of the Spin Blur by clicking-and-dragging the center control point of the spin bur dialog. Move it to the location you want to blur.

To adjust the strength of the blur, move the ring around the center of the spin blur clockwise, or change the “Blur Angle” in the control panel on the right side of the dialog box.

Adjust the size, rotation, and feathering of the Spin Blur by moving the control points on the outer edges of the Spin Blur.

To move the blur center by holding ALT/OPTN and clicking-and-dragging the center control point of the Spin Blur.

To duplicate a Spin Blur, hold ALT/OPTN + CTRL/CMD + Click-and-Drag the center of the control point of the Spin Blur.

Older Versions of Photoshop

Spin Blur was added to the Blur Gallery in Photoshop CC 2014. If you are using an older version of Photoshop, you will still be able to spin objects in Photoshop, but the process is a bit more complicated.

For older versions, go to ‘Filter – Blur – Radial Blur’ and choose ‘Radial”. This will allow you to rotate around a central point in your image. To use the Radial Blur, first make a selection around the area you wish to blur, then load the filter. You can choose the blur radius to add less or more blur.

Masking and Creating Multiple Spin Blurs
It is a good idea to duplicate the background layer before creating a Spin Blur so you can use a layer mask to make the blur visible only where you want it to show up.

Click on the Layer Mask Icon and paint black on the layer mask where you want to hide the Spin Blur.

To create multiple Spin Blurs, simply load several in the Spin Blur Filter, or if you need some areas to overlap, use the Spin Blur Filter on multiple layers and mask in the areas you want each to be visible.

Click the Create new fill or adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. Choose Solid Color and choose a medium gray from the Color Picker. Click OK. 2. Choose Filter – Noise – Add Noise. Click Convert to Smart Object. Set the Amount to 20 and check Monochromatic. Click OK. 3. Save the Adobe Stock image and Kyle’s brushes (.abr file) to the Creative Cloud Files folder on your computer. Download the Adobe Photoshop Sketch mobile app from the App Store for iOS[https://apple.co/2nY72rW], or from the Play Store[https://adobe.ly/2zbsTB2] for Android. Open the app and sign in with your Adobe ID. NOTE: Check the App Store and Play Store for the minimum OS requirements for running Adobe Photoshop Sketch on your mobile device. Spookify a portrait: 1. Tap + to start a new project. 2. Choose a portrait-layout Format. 3. Load the portrait: Tap the Background layer, tap the + icon and choose Image Layer, tap My Files, choose the portrait from the practice files, or use your own. Tap Open. Tap Done. 4. Load Kyle’s brushes: Tap and hold one of the brushes to display additional brushes. Tap Add, tap Import from CC Assets, tap Kyle’s Inktober Brushes.abr, then tap Open to load the brushes. NOTE: If you added the brushes to a library, choose it from the Libraries list. 5. Choose the brush settings: Tap the brush you want to use to select it. Tap the brush again to display additional options. Tap Size and drag up or down to adjust the brush size. Tap Color to change the brush color. 6. Paint the base colors: Tap the Sketch Layer. Paint on the parts of the portrait you want to enhance. Adjust the brush size as needed when painting different areas. Tap the slider icon below Color to explore Opacity and other brush settings. NOTE: We chose a light yellow to paint the “mummy bandages”. You can choose colors from a color wheel, RGB palette, or Themes. These options are available at the top of the color palette. 7. Add details: Tap the + icon and add a new Sketch Layer. Change the brush to a small, dark tip. Brush in the outline of the self-portrait and the lines that define the bandages and other elements. 8. Experiment with the different brushes and settings and have fun adding more spooky details. That's it!
