How to Place an Image in Text in Photoshop

How to Place an Image in Text in Photoshop

In today’s episode, we show you how to place an image in text in Photoshop!

Working With Text

Combining an image with text can be a super fun and effective technique. We start off with choosing our text and font. With our end goal in mind, we wanted to choose a text that was thick enough for the image to show through. After choosing a text, we adjusted the spacing of our text to our liking.

Clipping Mask

After we chose our text, we brought our image into photoshop. From there we used a clipping mask to make sure the image was only shown within the text.

Styling

From there we added a bit of style to the image. We used a drop shadow to help the text pop and stand out from the background. We also went in and changed the color of the background.

How to Fix Dark Shadows in Photoshop

0

Learn How to Retouch Photos Like a Pro: https://phlearn.com/rtfixshadows

In today’s episode, we show you how to fix dark shadows in photoshop.

Working with Dark Areas

It can be extremely annoying to deal with dark areas of an image. Using Curves isn’t always the best option because the highlights of the image tend to get blown out as well. We ran into this same problem when trying to use Levels to brighten up dark areas. So with two of our most commonly used techniques rendered useless, we had to find another method that would brighten up the shadows without blowing out the highlights.

Shadows/Highlights

Our best option is the Shadows/Highlights options. This allows us to only effect the shadows or only adjust our highlights. This is an extremely powerful tool because of the precision is gives us when working on an image. There is even a way to bring the color back into our image which really helps tie it all together.

How to Color Nail Polish in Photoshop

0

In today’s episode, we show you how to color nail polish in Photoshop!

Applying Nail Polish

Often times you might want to change the nail color of your subject. Maybe you want to try a color that would better fit the overall image. We have a very simple but effective solution for you!

Getting Started

We start off by adding a new adjustment layer and choosing Solid Color. Don’t feel locked in to the color you choose. It’s extremely simple to change the color later on. From there, we invert the layer mask. We then paint white on the layer mask and we only paint on the fingernails. The great thing about a layer mask is you don’t have to be incredibly precise when painting the color on the nails. Something like the Pen tool would probably give you more precision if that’s what you desire. Once you paint on top of your nails you are halfway done. It won’t look realistic at all because there are no highlights on top of the nails. The next step is figuring out how to add highlights on top of the color you just added. If you can do this successfully, your image will look realistic and the color will blend in seamlessly.

Adding Highlights

There are a lot of different ways to grab the highlights of your image. We start off by making our Color Fill Layer invisible. We then click on our background layer and then click, Channels. Channels helps us separate the colors in the image. The Red, Green and Blue in our image. Our Blue Channel is what we choose to focus on while we try to grab our highlights. We duplicate our Blue Channel and then pull up our Levels. We then make our darks a bit darker to help darken the skin and to help the highlights stand out. We then make a selection of the light areas on our Blue Channel Copy. After that, we create a new layer and fill our selection with white. This creates a layer with highlights from our entire image. We make our Color Fill Layer visible again and then create a Clipping Mask. This allows the highlights to show up only where our Color Fill layers are.

Finishing Touches

We then add a Gaussian Blur to help things blend it a bit more. We also add a Layer Mask and paint away all of the areas that we don’t want to be visible with the nail polish. This helps us get a very clean and precise look. It didn’t take us long but we were able to color finger nail polish right in photoshop! Now get out there and try this technique on some of your own images.

How to Style Women’s Hair in Photoshop

Bad hair days haunt us all. In today’s episode, we show you how to style women’s hair in photoshop.

Creating A Game Plan

We start off by figuring out a game plan for our image. We’ve found that planning out what you are going to be doing in Photoshop will make your process a lot smoother. It helps us define a focus. For this image, we were paying close attention to the hair of our subject. We looked for fly away hairs, areas that were sticking out and any large gaps in the hair. Using our Brush Tool, we circled and highlighted all the areas of image that we wanted to adjust.

Using The Liquify Tool

The Liquify Tool can be an awesome tool used for pushing and pulling your image. This comes in handy when we’re trying to shape Hair in Photoshop. This technique can really make it look like your subject had a perfect hair day. We start by making a background copy of our Layer. After that, we jump into our Liquify dialog. The option we choose is the Forward Warp tool. We recommend using a large brush first and then slowly making adjustments with smaller brushes. As we analyze and adjust the hair of our subject, we try and create an overall shape that’s flattering and still realistic. When we reveal our before and after thus far, we can see the huge changes made from simply using the Liquify Tool.

Filling The Gaps

We revert back to our original game plan. One of our points of emphasis was filling in the gaps of the hair. We use the Clone Stamp Tool to fill in the gaps. We select our Clone Stamp Tool and use the option, Current and Below. We then take an area of the opposite side of the subject’s hair so it helps give off the real life inconsistency hair does. Once we have an area sampled, we need it to fill in a gap of the hair. We change our Blend Mode from Normal to Darken. We then create a Black Layer mask over our image and paint white over the parts of the image we want to fill in.

Now there are numerous things we could do with the hair in order to make it exactly how we want it. This episode was just focusing on opening the doors of endless possibilities. Now get out there and Shape some hair…in Photoshop of course!

How to Use Blend If Sliders in Photoshop

Our #1 PRO Tutorial ever is now on Sale! https://phlearn.com/popular

How to Use Blend If Sliders in Photoshop

In today’s episode, we show you how to use the Blend If sliders in Photoshop.

The Power of Blend If

You’ll be amazed at what you can do when using the Blend If sliders. You can blend based off of information from the Layer you are on, or based off of information from the rest of the image. You can also target highlights or shadows which will definitely come in handy when you are using the Dodge & Burn technique.

RGB Examples

We create a layer with the colors: Black, White, Red, Green and Blue. We then pull up our Blend If dialog. We pay attention to the two sliders. The top slider uses information from the Layer you’re currently on. The bottom slider uses information from the rest of the image. We start with our top slider and as we slide from left to right we are left with only the White color remaining. If we use the top slider and slide from right to left, the colors disappear in the opposite order. Something else that’s awesome about Blend If sliders is that you can choose your default colors.

The bottom slider uses the information from the rest of the image to see what’s going to be visible and invisible. As we drag our slider from left to right, the information is pulled based off of what we have on the underlying layer. When we drag from right to left, the lights in the image disappear first and then the darks.

The last helpful tip with Blend If is the feathering option. Hold Alt or Option which will separate our sliders and allow us to feather our blending. The same effect still applies when moving the slider from one side to another, the difference is it isn’t as choppy as it was before. When using Blend If, we do advise that you use feathering. That’ll help give a more realistic approach.

Enhancing Highlights

We create a New Layer on top of our image and paint white over the area we want to add highlights. We pull up our Blend If dialog box and drag our bottom slider from left to right to start defining where our white highlights will be visible. (Remember to Feather!) We now change the Blend Mode in our dialog box from Normal to Soft Light. This really helps us add definition to our image.

Enhancing Shadows

We use a similar technique when adding shadows to our image. We create a new Layer and paint black over the areas we want shadows. We adjust our sliders to our liking and also bring down our Opacity a bit. We are now able to see how the dark areas of the image are affected in comparison to the Highlighted areas.

Getting Started

How awesome would it be to be able to create stars?! Now of course, this can’t be done in real life but in Photoshop, the possibilities are endless. We start off by selecting our image. We choose a beautiful panoramic image of the New York Skyline. Now in our original photo, there are no stars in the sky. This is perfect because it gives us room to operate in Photoshop. Some people might approach this process by creating a tiny brush and manually placing the stars into the skyline. This might not be the best approach for two simple reasons:

It would take you a great amount of time to position stars manually in Photoshop.
It won’t look realistic, all the stars would look exactly the same.
We knew that we had to approach creating stars with a different mindset if we wanted it to be time efficient and look realistic.

Creating a Custom Brush

We start off with creating a Custom Brush. We bring up a new document and make the size 500 x 500 pixels. After we have our new document, we focus on the details of our Custom Brush. Whenever creating a Custom Brush, make sure the background is white and the Brush color is black. We paint two tiny dots on opposite ends of our document. This will give the stars more variation when we actually place them on our image. Now that we have our Star Brush created we are halfway done. We need to change our Brush Settings in order to get our Star Brush to where we want it. We adjust our Shape Dynamics, Angle Jitter, and even Brush Size until our Star Brush is perfect. Scattering and Transfer also help with the spacing and visibility of our Star Brush. The goal is for our stars to look realistic, there should be no specific pattern or predictability. We finalize everything by saving a New Brush Preset. Make sure you name your Brush something easy to remember. Now that you’ve saved your new Brush, it’ll always be available for you!

Painting Stars

We begin painting stars over our image. We play around with the settings by making the size a bit larger and smaller. This helps us add variation to our stars. We then go back in and apply a Layer Mask to the image. We paint black every on the image that we don’t want our stars showing up. We decided to add a glow to our stars. Using our Layer Effects, we click on Outer Glow and choose the color of the glow. We bring the size of our stars up a bit and bring the Opacity down a bit as well. We finish things off by adding a Motion Blur to our stars. We adjust the Distance and Angle to our liking and this really helps sell the effect. We zoom out to make sure the stars are to our liking. The great thing about having the brush saved is that it’s easy to start over if we want. Now get out there and add some stars to some skies!
