How to Remove Distracting Logos in Photoshop

Stranger Things + PHLEARN! OMG!!! Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NKLqDxfh2I Download the Sample Image Here: https://phlearn.com/remove-logos-branding-photoshop Logos can be a distracting element in photos. Also, clients may want logos removed in their images before publishing. Stock Image websites won't accept images with logos in them, forcing you to remove logos in photos. Learn how to remove logos in this episode! How to Remove Logos (Simple) If the logo you want to remove is surrounded by a simple background, the best tool for the job is the Spot Healing Brush Tool. In this example we remove the branding on the truck by created a new layer, selecting the Spot Healing Brush Tool, checking the “Sample all Layers” box on the top of the screen and painting over the logo. If you find that the edges need a bit of cleanup, this is where the Clone Stamp Tool comes in. Create a new layer, select the Clone Stamp Tool and check “Sample All Layers” or “Sample Current and Below”. Next, open the “Clone Source” window by going to “Window-Clone Source” and be sure to check “Show Overlay” to see a preview of the Clone Stamp Area. Hold ALT/OPTN + CLICK on the area you want to sample. Then paint over the area you would like to cover. Be sure to line up edges via the preview before painting. How to Remove Logos (Advanced) If you want to remove a logo that is placed on a more complex area of your image, be sure to create a selection first. In this example, both the bottom and the left edge of the truck need to be maintained while removing the logo. Start by selecting the Polygonal Lasso Tool and create a selection around the edge of the logo. The edge of the selection will be “Hard Edged” and needs to be softened if it is to blend into the rest of the image. To soften the edge, go to "Select-Select and Mask." If you are using an older version of Photoshop, this will be called "Refine Edge." Change the view settings so you can see the edge in comparison with the rest of the image. Adjust the "Feathering" until the edge of the selection matches the edge of the photo. After making the selection, you are ready to remove the logo. In this example, we use the brush tool and sample the color of the truck and simply paint over the logo. If this logo is on a more complex background, consider using the Clone Stamp Tool. In this example, the logo is so close to a surface that it must be removed in two steps. After removing the main area, there is some logo that remains visible outside of the selection. Inverse the selection by going to "Select-Inverse" or pressing "CTRL/CMD + I." After inversing the selection, use the same technique to paint outside of the selection to remove the rest of the logo and maintain a straight edge. Is the grass a little lifeless? Add more green! Is the sky a bit gray? Add more blue! How to Select and Change Colors In this tutorial, you will learn how to select and change colors using the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. First, go to “Layers - New Adjustment Layer - Hue/Saturation” to create a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer. Notice if you move the “Hue” Slider, it will change all the colors in the image. To select certain colors, click on the drop-down menu that defaults to “Master.” Select the color you would like to edit, then be sure to click on the Eye Dropper to fine tune the color selection. After clicking on the far-left Eye Dropper, click on the color in your image you would like to effect. After clicking on the color in your image, adjust the “Hue” & “Saturation” sliders to add more color to those areas in your photo. Repeat these steps for other colors in your image you would like to alter. How to Select and Change Sky Color In the first step, you learned how to target a specific color and change it. Now you will learn how to target an area of your photo and add more color. First, select the Magic Wand Tool and click on the sky in the image. If the entire sky is not selected, try increasing the Tolerance of the Magic Wand Tool. To include more of the image in the selection, hold SHIFT+CLICK with the Magic Wand Tool to add to the existing selection. After selecting the sky, create another Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer and click on the "Colorize" box. This will allow you to choose the color of the selected area. In this example, we add more blue into the sky by adjusting the Hue and Saturation sliders. How to Retouch Environments in Photoshop

Stranger Things + PHLEARN! OMG!!! Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NKLqDxfh2I Download Sample Images and Follow along. https://phlearn.com/retouch-environments Learn how to clean up any environment in a few simple steps. In this episode we show you how to use tools like the Brush Tool, Spot Healing Brush, Clone Stamp, and Pen Tool to remove distractions and simplify an environmental photo. Remove Objects with the Spot Healing Brush Tool The Spot Healing Brush Tool is perfect for removing objects on a simple background. In this example we remove wall hooks with the Spot Healing Brush Tool. These hooks are on a white wall, making them easier to remove. How to Clone Objects in Photoshop In this example, two of the windows in the photo are frosted and one of them is transparent. The frosted windows look cleaner and more simple than the transparent window, so in this case it makes sense to replace the transparent window with a frosted one. To do this, make a selection around one of the frosted windows, then duplicate it to a new layer by pressing CTRL/CMD+J. Next, skew the window by holding CTRL/CMD and clicking on one of the corners of the layer and transforming it until the window matches the perspective in the photo. Next, create a layer mask to blend the new frosted window into the photo. How to Retouch using the Brush Tool You may be surprised at the versatility and power of the Brush Tool. In this example, we remove a heater from a photo using the Brush Tool. Simply hold ALT/OPTN+CLICK on the color you would like to sample (In this case it is the wall color) and paint over the object you would like to remove. If you are working on a relatively simple photo you won’t need to sample many colors, if you are working on a more complex photo, you may need to sample repeatedly. If needed, make a selection to refine where you don’t want your brush paint to be visible. In this example we use the Pen Tool to outline the chair and remove it from the wall layer. How to Create a Tilt-Shift Effect in Photoshop

Stranger Things + PHLEARN! OMG!!! Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NKLqDxfh2I Learn how to draw more attention to your subject by adding a Tilt-Shift Effect to your photos! How to Select Focus Area The first step in creating a tilt-shift effect is to cut the subject out of the background. This can be done in a number of ways, in this case we use the “Select – Focus Area” filter to make a selection of the area of the photo that is in focus. Be sure to adjust the settings to include most of the subject and use the PLUS and MINUS tools to add or subtract from the selection. Don’t worry if the selection isn’t perfect, we are going to use the Select & Mask Filter to enhance the selection. How to Refine a Selection using Select & Mask To refine a selection, go to “Select- Select and Mask” and change your view to a setting that allows you to see the selection accurately. In this case we use the “Quick Mask” view that makes the selected area red. Paint around the subject with the “Refine Edge Tool” to refine areas like hair or anything that has small detail. To add or subtract from your selection, use the brush tool within the Select and Mask Dialog. Hold ALT/OPTN to switch from ADD to SUBTRACT from selections. Take your time and create the best selection you can, this will effect how realistic your Tilt-Shift Effect will be. How to Save a Selection Now that you have spent a while creating a perfect selection, it is time to save it. We both know you don’t want to do this over again. To save a selection, go to “Select – Save Selection” and give it a name. To load the selection, go to “Select – Load Selection.” How to Create the Tilt-Shift Blur Once the selection is active, click on “Filter – Blur Gallery – Tilt Shift.” If the blur is on your subject instead of the background, exit the filter and go to “Select – Inverse”. Within the Tilt Shift Filter, move the blur center to the feet of the subject and adjust the feathering lines to create a realistic blur. This will blur only the background, leaving the subject in focus. To add blur to the foreground as well, you can adjust the settings in the current Tilt-Shift Filter or apply the filter and create another Tilt-Shift effect with only the foreground selected. How to Retouch Hair in Photoshop

Stranger Things + PHLEARN! OMG!!! Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NKLqDxfh2I Download the Sample Image Here! https://phlearn.com/retouch-hair How to Remove Stray Hair The best tool to remove stray hair is the Content Aware Healing Brush Tool. Be sure to create a new layer and choose “Sample All Layers” from the top menu. This tool can be used to remove most stray hair and any hair that is moving in the wrong direction. How to Clean Up Edges and Create a Hair Outline The Spot Healing Brush Tool gets confused when working on more complicated areas like the edges of the hair. To create a clean edge, we need to create a selection. Start by using the Pen Tool to trace an edge around the hair in your photo. Simply click and drag in the direction of the hair and create a loop. After making a Pen Path to define the edge, right-click on the path and choose “Make Selection” After making a selection, create a new layer and choose the Clone Stamp Tool. Be sure to sample “Current and Below.” With the selection active, hold ALT/OPTN to sample outside of the hairline, then paint inside of the selection to remove stray hair and clean the edge of the hair. If needed, inverse the selection and paint more hair inside of the hair line. Repeat these steps as necessary to clean up the complete hair line. Add Additional Hair with the Brush Tool To begin, choose the Brush Tool and make the brush size small enough to replicate the width of a hair. Sample the color from the existing hair by holding ALT/OPTN and clicking on the hair. Next, paint small lines at the edge of the hair to replicate stray hair. Why would we add more stray hair? Hair will never have a 100% solid edge, after all, it is made up of thousands of individual strands. To make the hair more realistic, paint in a few “well placed” strays. The goal here is to make the hair look real, not to make it messy again. How to Fill in Gaps in Hair Some hair styles will have gaps where hair doesn’t fall correctly. In this case, the subject’s bangs have a few areas where the hair isn’t filled in. Choose the Clone Stamp Tool and make the brush size small enough to replicate the width of a hair. Hold ALT/OPTN to sample the hair and paint it in strokes to fill in the gaps! How to FREAK People Out Using Photoshop

Stranger Things + PHLEARN! OMG!!! Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NKLqDxfh2I Download the Sample Image Here https://phlearn.com/tutorial/freak-out-photoshop/ Learn how to black out eyes and FREAK people out in Photoshop! In this tutorial, follow along during our photoshoot where we pour black liquid on Aaron’s head, then take the image into Photoshop for finishing touches. Get the Proper Lighting to Black Out Eyes The key to making a black eye ball look believable in Photoshop is lighting. Be sure your subject is facing a large window or other lighting source that will create light reflections in their eyes. If there is no reflection in the person’s eye, the effect will look flat and life-less. Quick Tip: Be sure to photograph your subject facing a window so there is a visible reflection in their eye. How to Black-Out Eyes in Photoshop After bringing your image into Photoshop, grab the Brush Tool by pressing B. Choose a small round brush with a medium-soft edge and on a new layer, paint over the entire eye. Be sure to feather the edge where the eyeball meets the inner “pink” parts of the eye. If needed, blur the layer to make it blend into the outer part of the eye. For added realism, crete a CURVES ADJUSTMENT LAYER and bring it darker, then mask it in right around the black eye. This will make it look like the eye lid is reflecting black, not white. How to Copy the Original Reflection To make this effect look real, there must be a reflection in the eye. Turn off the black layer, revealing the original eye below. Navigate to “Select - Color Range” and use the eye dropper to click on the lightest part of the reflection. Now the highlight is selected. Create a new layer and choose white as your foreground color. Next, paint white over the reflection selection. Now you will have one layer with black covering the eye and another layer with the original reflection copied. Make sure to place the reflection layer above the black layer. Additional Editing To finish the image, we use a LEVELS ADJUSTMENT LAYER and choose the background with the “White Point Eye Dropper” to make the background completely white. Next we use the BRUSH TOOL to paint over the seam in the backdrop. To make the image look a bit more creepy, we add a HUE/SATURATION ADJUSTMENT LAYER and lower the saturation of the entire image. This image is sure to freak out your friends and family!
